have a Photoshop question please.

I sent my client a RGB file, a cartoon….but this is what he says. ————————————————-
HI MIKE, when you do the speech in the bubbles can you make it single colour
rather than 4 colour registration

When we convert your files to CMYK we end up with a 4 colour black, although
this isn’t a major problem from time to time the registration on the printing presses can wander a bit which could make the text difficult to
read.
————————————————–

I don’t want to retype the text, how can I change the original RGB file?
There are too many cartoons to retype all the text…too much work.

Thanks, see the cartoons here.

More information: are the original files still in layers with text still as text? What version of Photoshop?

Cute cartoons, but why aren’t you using Illustrator and CMYK for print? Not meant as a condemnation, just wondering.

Flattened, RGB, PS v5

why aren’t you using Illustrator and CMYK for print?
I don’t know, I think I shall in future….but I have hundreds of cartoons which I need to correct.

I have now changed the mode to CMYK, but then if you go Windows/Show channels, you’ll see the text still contains all 4 colours plus black….I want black only.
So the question is, how do I selct the text, then remove all the colours leaving black only.

Thanks.

Ouch. Lesson #1: Always, ALWAYS keep copies of your layered files. If you had kept copies in layers, this would be a trivial thing to do. Because you did not keep the layered files, it’s not so trivial.

Illustrator is definitely the right tool for this kind of work; Photoshop is not.

You can change your CMYK separation parameters in CMYK Setup. Go to your Color Settings command, in the CMYK popup menu choose Custom CMYK, then in the Separation Options section of the Custom CMYK dialog, use:

Separation Type: GCR
Black Generation: Maximum
Black ink limit: 100%
Total ink limit: 280%
UCA amount: 0%

However, be aware that this may put quite a bit of black ink in dark colors as well. Talk to your print shop and find out if this is acceptable.
