Photoshop 7
Dell Inspiron 8600 running Windows XP Professional
with 1 Gb of RAM

For some reason, when I try to adjust Levels, Photoshop freezes. The "close" button on the top right goes opaque and clicking on any other tool prompts the computer to make a bleeping sound. The program can be minimized and restored, but that’s it. All other tools, palettes and effects appear to function properly so long as they are employed before attempting to open Levels.

Should I try reinstalling Photoshop or something else?

As a test, go to control panel and run the system applet. Find Video Hardware Acceleration and set it to NONE. Then try photoshop. If the problem goes away, it’s vid drivers. You’ll need to update or roll back a version of drivers.

Fwiw, reinstallation of photoshop is harmless because it doesn’t overwrite your preferences. So if it isn’t vid drivers, reset your preferences per the procedure in the faq.

YrbkMgr and Dave – thanks for your assistance. Dave, it turned out to be a bug in changing monitor resolution as suggested in the link you forwarded. This was the solution in case anyone else has the same problem:
____________________________________________________________ _________

"Photoshop remembers where your last dialog box was on the monitor, and so when you reduce resolution, the dialog box will fall outside the viewable area (reported behaviour).

Fix1: Increase your resolution to max setting, create a ‘dialog box situation’, and move the dialog box to upper left corner of screen. When you hit ‘OK’ in the dialog, Photoshop memorizes the position, and you can now safely decrease resolution again.

Photoshop is supposed to automatically place dialogs within your resolution setting, but fails on some systems / situations. It has been marked as a bug, and will be fixed in the next release.

It is recommended to restart Photoshop every time you change your monitor resolution."

What threw me was when he said "freezes". Yet another case of hearing hoofbeats and thinking zebras, instead of horses. <shrug>.
