I have created a path around an object. The first object is in front of another object that also needs to be outlined.

The two object share a common edge.

Is there a way to exclude the first path from the second path. I know this can be done in Alfa Channels but I need to know how to accomplish this with paths.

I have tried duplicating the first path then drawing the second path with an overlap over the first, then use the options bar to exclude the first path from the second but it did not work.

Thanks for your help.

I assume you are using the Pen Tool to lay down your anchor points. One thing that you might consider doing is to use the Marquee Tool to select the first object using the New Selection setting then change to Add to selection to select the second object then to the Paths palette and use the Make Work Path From Selection button. If this method is no good for you let me know.

Good luck,
Ron

I meant to say Lasso Tool not Marquee tool.

On second thought, a more flexible and precise method would be to continue to use the Pen tool to lay down each path. Then with the Path Selection tool drag the mouse so as to select all points then use the Combine button in conjunction with the Shape Area buttons.
