I would like to change the color of the background and use the gradient tool. Can that be done when the object has so much fine detail?

Hmmm scalped eh!

If your using CS it should be a breeze to change the colour with the colour relpacement tool, adding a gradient might be very difficult without loosing all the very fine hair detail, basically you would need to select the hair foreground and paste it onto a new layer then create the gradient layer behind it.

Your best bet would probably be a mask and feather the hair edge. Taking your time with the mask, using an the alfa channel, zoomed in and painting in various shades of gray around the feather area to achieve best results.

Another thing to try, since that looks like a very uniform gray in the background is to go to the Blending Options/Layer Styles dialog by Ctrl-clicking on the layer (can’t be a Background). Pull the Blend If Gray slider to the left a little then hold down Alt and pull the left half of that slider further left. The gray should gradually disappear, revealing the layer underneath, which can be your gradient.

If you have similar gray in the image itself the image can be painted back in with the History Brush after you merge with another layer. Make sure you keep the layer name or the History Brush won’t work.
