Hi,
A friend of mine is asking for a recommendation for a low cost vector program for doing some blanket designs. She does not want something as complicated or expensive as AI but that is the only one I know about. Does anyone know of a low cost alternative to AI?

Thanks,
Ron

Hi Owen,

I found this:

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1150981 051929

it looks interesting but at a thousand bucks it’s hardly low cost.

I bought Illustrator 10 new in the box, not academic, for $120 at a computer show.

Ah yes, I think inkscape replaces sodipodi, which was a
terrible thing to install. I wonder if inkscape saves in postscript or AI?

Thanks Psygnosis,
I am going to see how she does with inkscape; if it doesn’t work out I will have her look at Xara.

That’s not a bad idea. I could probably find on older version on Ebay too. I will see what she says about inkscape – it may be easier to use than Illustrator.

Thanks

Hey Ron,

Inkscape is a pretty cool alternative choise for AI or Freehand and it is open-source. You can also import a lot of graphic formats and you can export your work in the following formats:
– SVG
– SVGZ
– Postscript (*.ps)
– Encapsulated Postscript (*.eps)
– Encapsulated Postscript Interchange (*.epsi)
– Adobe Illustrator (*.ai)
– LaTeX (*.tex)
– POVRay (*.pov)

cheers

Xara is fast and powerful. A great product greatly over looked even when Corel was selling a version of it many years ago.
