I’m finishing a book with InDesign and need a color front on image of a camera lens. I’ve looked through hundreds of web sites without luck. It should be a professional video lens with multi colored light reflecting off the glass. Again straight on close up of the lens preferable. Could someone help me find such an image. Thank you kindly in advance. Harold Gladstone

How much are you willing to pay?

I’ll shoot one for you in-studio and send you a high-res drum scan.

There’s a local TV station right down the street. I’ve known them since the early 60’s when my Dad worked there.

It won’t be cheap, so think hard about your answer.

You want a "professional" image from the web?
Not to mention that you won’t find one of sufficient resolution for publishing, you are seemingly willing to just steal one?

Thanks for the replies. This is a not for profit community resource guide and I want to make a small ad for a man who has a small video production co. He does not have sufficient revenue to pay I’m just trying to help him out. I will super material on top of the glass of the lens so the actual resolution of the lens itself is insignificant. The overall dimensions will not exceed 1.5 inches. Actually I checked all the manufacturers sites for new cameras and the shots are taken from the side or at an angle. A front on would be best. Surely one can be found legally. Thanks

Write to one of the manufacturers and explain your situation.

If it’s truly a registered not-for-profit situation, and you can prove it, they may just give you carte blanch go-ahead to use one of their images.

But still…the guy you want to do this for? He wants business. He should understand that it takes a couple of rupees to promote his business. If he doesn’t want to pay, well….you and he both need to think about that, and what that portends.

Otherwise…look: This isn’t Smithsonian Magazine your doing, it’s just a small commmunity resource guide. It doesn’t have to look like an Avedon studio shot. Yes, I understand you want to do the best image you can. I agonize over that sort of quality issue every day.

Set up a tripod, apply some good, bright indirect lighting and have a go at doing the photo yourself.

Save some money, and teach yourself some skills in the process.

Quality doesn’t come cheap, or easy.

It seems strange that a person who has a video production company, wouldn’t have a camera that he could take a picture of his video camera with. Sheesh! How ‘not-for-profit’ is shooting your own photo for an ad?

Pirsig! Damn, this is contagious! But then, I am typing with the index finger standing at attention, all bandaged up after losing an encounter with a very sharp blade.

So, what’s your excuse! 😉

I really appreciated Persig. His chataqua on quality is one I have used in teaching more than once.

Then you should be able to spell his name! 🙂

Hmm…never heard nor read "chautauqua" used as a noun in that way. It pretty much makes linguitstic sense though.

I’ve been to Chautauqua (and swam in the lake!) in NY state for a sort of Summer Camp (ummm…1971, maybe?), and learned some cool stuff while I was there. (Can I speak of my first intimate encounter with a girl as a "chautauquian" learning experience? Are we really sure we can even say "chautauquian" here? 😉 )

And by Castaneda, Larry, do you mean Castañeda? As in: brujo Don Juan Matus-meeting and Sonoran desert-exploring Castañeda?

Right, Len.

Also, this topic really belongs in the Lounge to begin with. I didn’t realize we were in the PS part after getting under way.

You win the spelling shootout, Phoz! 😉

Mr. Napalm Phosphor should offer one
of his great images for free
(nobody had ever seen any, because he doesn´t
have a real name and a website).

I love you too, Doctor Hoffmann.

I even guide people to your website occasionally, because you offer good information. A little esoteric for most folks, but good, none-the-less.

And just FYI….I don’t do much in the way of studio photography these days, because it’s not part of what I do for a living, but I know how to, and can, if I must.

I was printing passable Black and White prints by the time I was 8 years old (1967), and grew up with a darkroom in my house until 1983. When one has a father who has won a United Press International award for photography, it’s pretty much expected that the kids will learn a little about the art.

As for building a website? I hate it. I’ve tried, but my brain’s just not built for code tweaking. If I build a page and it doesn’t look good on every system, through every browser, I ditch it. I start with an idea, start working on it, and by the time I get done, I hate it, so I drag the folder to the trash. I’m a little obsessive in that regard. MMaybe I need to study a little more about CSS.

I have a few disjointed pages online, but no full cohesive site.

You’re brilliant, Doctor Hoffmann, in scientific matters, and I really appreciate what you do. I can’t do what you do, but I read about your work to educate myself.

But your artistic eye needs a whole lot of work.

I intend no hostility toward you, Gernot.

Truth to be told, I’d relish an occasion where you and I could languish over a great dinner and exchange ideas. I love the science, and I’m always willing to learn more.

Much of my ancestral heritage from 300+ years ago is from the Black Forest/Alsace region.

You and I would get along just fine, Gernot.

Interesting. Phoz. My first printing experience was around 1946 or 1947. A 5×7 contact print system. I was about 6 or 7 also.

I sold my first photo when I was 12. The local newspaper office had a fire and burned down. Across from the Fire dept! No one thought to take a photo, so I did with a brownie. It was the only shot of the fire.

I am a french author of (many) books on photo and video. (so forgive my poor english). But I know the answer … for my particular case. I did not undestand if you are the author of the book. As I guess not, you should work in accordance with both the author and the publisher. If the book is a very serious one, the author well known, etc. You should get the picture needed (high quality file I mean) for free.
1. Look through the manufacurer’s commercial documentation (leaflets)
on their web sites. Very easy, for there is very few top manufacturers of video lenses. I would say CA… and FU… plus one or two others.
2. When you have found the picture you need (you will).
3. Send an official letter (in the name of the author and/or the publisher) in which you explain clearly that this photo will be published on a front cover, of an important book, etc. (so you need the best version (original file) of it).
4. You should promise (swear) that the name of the manufacturer, product will be clearly indicated, and many thanks, on the first inside page of the book (front cover by courtesy of, name of the photographer if needed, copyright).
5. So, this picture becomes not a real "advertising", but an indirect reference to a well known brand name. If you suggest it well, the firm A will appreciate your preference instead of a product of firm B. I had this precise experience with one of my most recent books. I asked first the picture (I knew to be most appropriate) to one, but I got a better cover from the other manufacturer) … 10 minutes to get the hires file and authorisation to publish for free … Regards,

++++++++++++++
I don’t know much (I mean enough for my needs) about data processing, but a lot about photography, art and technique.
In my not so humble opinion, Gernot is not only the "brillant scientist" everybody know, but also an excellent photographer : some beautiful examples on his site, often associated with poetry. So his "artistic eye" is as important for me as his "scientific mind". Pour moi, "pas l’un sans l’autre ! "(En Alsace, on parle aussi français !). Best regards.
