What is the best way to make web banners small in size. I’m trying to get an animated banner down to under 50k. What can I do. Thanks.

Is this a second thread of the same name?

The way to get your file size down is to limit the number of colors. If you want to create an animated banner, remember that it’s the combines sizes of each frame that add up to the size of the animation.

Create your images using large areas of solid colors and text and combine them as layers. Then specify which frame order the animation is to run in ImageReady.

Dan,

Since you say it is animated, then that implies a GIF file, which already means a reduced number of colors. So, the next thing I’d suggest is to examine the number of frames in your animation and delete those most similar to their neighbors or perhaps try just deleting every 3rd or 4th frame. Apart from that, the only other thing I can think of is to reduced the banner dimensions. If that seems impossible, does any of the banner remain static? If so, slice out that part of the image so the animation remains as small a portion of the banner as possible, then build up the total banner by adding in the static images. You’ll likely need a table to keep all the images contained as desired.

Another possibility that may even be better, and smaller, is to use Flash if possible.

Hope that helps,

Ways to minimize animated gifs:

a) small physical size, particularly of the animated region

b) low color count/solid colors (as Larry said)

c) minimal number of steps (many good animations only use two or three layers)

d) don’t do it … animations are annoying and passe.
