Hi,

All the users in my company ask for phoshop or illustrator only to be able to open the EPS files sent by our custumers. They don’t need to modify them.

Does it exist a viewer ? I tryed a lot of freeware and shareware, but non of them open properly the eps files.

I don’t even know where the eps format comes from !

Thanks in advance

Chris

EPS is "Encapsulated PostScript." It was originally developed by (IIRC) Xerox and then Adobe during the period when they were developing the PostScript page description language. Currently … It "comes" from the printing industry as the main user. The file format is capable of handling both raster and vector image data, and is also one of the primary file formats used in CMYK color (four-color) printing "by the millions, on a printing press."

I do *not* know of a practical viewer application, although you could probably cobble together something that would work quite well using the open source programs GhostScript and The GIMP.

There are two programs I have used that will open EPS files, at least to look at them:
Fotostation
http://www.fotostation.com/
And
Extensis Portfolio
http://www.extensis.com/en/products/product_family.jsp?local e=en_US&id=prod60 005
Both are also excellent organizers of all types of digital assets. Not free, but cheaper than than Photoshop/Illustrator. Both programs are designed to be used in a networked/shared environment.
Both have free trials.

try irfanview (www.irfanview.com) or xnview (www.xnview.com) for eps files based on pixelformats (both are showing only an eps integrated tiff preview) – for vector based eps files i recommend st thumbnails explorer (http://www.softfields.com/prode.htm)

why not ask the customer (assuming they can create illy files they will have the capability) with eps to convert to PDF/ACROBAT format so you can open with the free viewer but do not need to purchase unless you need to go the other way?
EPS is a post script format.

Install GhostScript with GSView from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

or use Distiller to convert to PDF and view with Acrobat.
