first thing to try is to reset the prefrences per the faq at the top of this forum.
…. And check the waste basket of your pc. I believe a search for a file skips that one.
And no shortcut to the waste basket inside the documents tree I hope?
Rob
Is this happening in PSCS or PS7?
I too use the file browser for sorting images by drag-n-drop; to the tune of about 3,000 image per day, every day (PS7). So follow Dave’s advice as a first step, because even if they ARE in the wastebasket, they shouldn’t be.
Peace,
Tony
3,000 a DAY? When do you have time for work?
😉
That IS my work pal. Digitize, process, categorize, move, wrap ’em up and get ’em out the door.
Tony,
I think Lawrence meant: "3,000 a day? when do you have time to work on them".
If that’s not what he meant I stand corrected.
I’d still like to know how this worked out for Markal. A file browser deleting files is a nightmare.
Rob
Right, Rob. In an 8 hr day, you have 6+ min per image, average. Given the layout of the Browser, moving that many per day is open for errors. And, unless you catch it right away, you are into search to find it if you remember the name!
Hat’s off to you Tony!
Thanks for the clarification Rob. My processing of images is 99.5% automated. I batch process images. Also, my work day is 14-18 hours. The way I move images is that during phase 1, images are catagorized and an action places a layer on top of the image that tells me what to do with the image. Then it’s easy to see, within the file browser, where it needs to be moved to for the second phase of the process. In that process, the first step is to remove the "categorization" layer and continue processing.
Therefore I don’t have to spend time analyzing thumbnails in order to decide where they should be moved to.
Point is though, I too am curious about the CS browser deleting images during a move. That would serious skrew the pooch for my workflow.

The problem resolved itself, but I don’t know how or why and I hope it doesn’t happen again. I had restarted twice when the problem was first occuring with no effect then I gave up and went to bed. The next day, when I started CS file browser worked properly. I had done nothing.
I had never noticed this, but when file browser started working properly again when moving files to other folders a gray bar appeared in the folders pane outlining a folder and this gray bar was not appearing when I was having the problem.
Finally, the deleted images were in fact not deleted. I had checked the recycle bin at the time of the problem and they were not there. As mentioned I had searched my HDs for them at the time of the problem and they did not show up. HOWEVER, I searched for them again after file browser started working normally again and they turned up in two different folders that were most definitely not my destination folders and were nowhere near the destination folders (not adjacent or even within 10 or 15 folders of the destination folder on the tree.) I can’t explain any of it, yes it all occured the way I have described, no I’m not a lunatic, and all’s well that ends well. Thank you those who made suggestions.

Mmmm, so going to sleep indeed solves a lot of problems.
But seriously, I’m glad your files are still there. It looks like, when dragging, the destination directory was way out of the window then, but how that’s possible….
Anyway, When I drag files in the browser, I always look which directory is lit up before dropping the files, sometimes when I’m too close to the top or bottom edge of this window the thing starts to scroll at tremendous speed, and dropping then means I have to search for the files.
Rob
no I’m not a lunatic,
there, there markal. of course you’re not.
(get the nets guys! i’ll keep him calm)!
so markal, have you ever had a puppy?
🙂
yeah, but I didn’t know you had to feed it and so I ran into some problems…
