Disappearing Defaults

I’m using Windows XP Pro, SP1 … my system is stable, no viruses, etc. Photoshop CS is the program I use most often. Maybe one time out of 25 (just a guess) when I open Photoshop, the defaults that I’ve set up seem to have disappeared … it comes up as if it were the first time I was using it … …. palettes all lined up on the right, scratch disk returned to C:\ … and so forth. Any idea what causes this (and how to prevent it)? If it had happened just once or twice, I’d assume there was some unique anomaly in my default file … but it happens two or three times a month.

Grateful for anyone’s opinions … thanks … happy 2005.

Have you changed your monitor’s screen resolution? Pressing ALT+CTRL+SHFT will do this too, and is in fact the preferred method to restore the default settings should something become quirky. One thing you may want to do is set your preferences to the way you like–your scratch disk settings, memory allocation, history states, plug-in directories, etc. Then copy the prefs file in Explore in your Adobe folder under Application Data and paste them into another place on your hard drive. Then the next time this happens, just copy and paste it back. That way, you will always have an uncorrupted Prefs file at your disposal!
