I have an image that I want to darken some of its highlights using the Healing Brush Tool.
Here is what I did: I created a new layer and set its blending mode to darken and than used the healing tool in normal mode. That worked fine.

For a comparison I did it a second way which is: created a new layer and left it in normal mode and set the healing brush tool’s mode to darken and use it to make the corrections. Both ways gave me good results. Is one of the two methods that I used better than the other to accomplish this task? Do both of the above methods normally give the same results?

if I want to darken an area I use burn tools
to do non destructive dodge burning you can make a 50-% gray layer (edit> fill> 50% gray)
put it on overlay in the top of layer palette
it will appear transparent
you can dodge/burn on this layer without affecting your image at all

other methods I would use
select area needs to be fixed
use an adjustment layer of curves

I am not sure why you used heal tool to darken
unless you are fixing the texture of your image as well for some reason sometimes highlight areas have no data (white out) so they do need fill with texture and color

if you got a result you like ..great

Thanks for your help. There were areas on the face that where bad areas that I had to use the healing tool on to fix. They happened to be also on the light side so I set the mode to darken. Also sometimes when using the healing brush on the face I find that it doesn’t make it dark enough so I use the darken mode. Is this the wrong way to do it?
