My subject title pretty much says it all. I have a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro. CS4 crashes every single time when closing. I’ve combed the web for a solution. All I’ve found is a lot of other people experiencing the same problem. So I thought I’d check here to see if anyone has come up with a solution.

Need to know some version info. CS4 is not guaranteed to run on earlier versions of OSX. Are you running Leopard (10.5). Does it crash on two different systems – the Macbook Pro and the Mac Pro?

If you haven’t done this already, reset your prefs by holding down Command+Option+Shift while Photoshop starts up.

Mike, I am using the latest version of OS X. Both computers are new and it does crash exactly the same way on both computer. I reset my preferences. Makes no difference.

Need to make sure all the obvious steps are covered. Did Photoshop ever close without crashing on either system? If so, and if you are running time machine, then restore your app folder and settings folders and see if either of these is causing the problem. My next suggestion would be to turn off OpenGL to see if that stops the crash. Then I’d suggest looking for the latest version of your video driver. I’d install any outstanding OS patches, and remove any graphics related extensions that you may have installed on both computers.

An automation plugin that runs in the background could also cause a crash on exit – so move all your plugins, temporarily, to another folder. I had a situation with PowerPoint on Leopard where it was necessary to remove all the settings and program files, then do a complete re-install. Perhaps a similar procedure would fix your Photoshop problem.

Failing all of this, let’s hope that someone else with the same problem chimes in.

I don’t believe Photoshop ever closed without crashing on either system. I am not yet running Time Machine. I tried turning off Open GL. Crashes just the same, I’m afraid.

I’m a bit confused as to how to get to the video driver on a Mac. It’s not as accessable and updatable as it is on a PC. This is one of the areas where the transition from PC is not so smooth.

All patches are installed. I have a few plugins. I’ll try moving them to another folder, temporarily. Thanks for the suggestion.

Seeing all the people posting on various forums that this problem exists, I’m pretty amazed no one has posted a solution…if there is one.

The simple solution is what you don’t want to hear, having paid up to double what the hardware you own is worth:
Dual boot to Vista 64 and install the PC version which uses more sophisticated code for the 64 bit platform, particularly with regard to video drivers. Video drivers on the Windows platform are more sophisticated because users push them farther and they have to be tweaked more often. You should research generic sources of crashes on Unix OSes because that is what the Mac OS really is.

Why would I go from a single program that operates but crashes on closing to an entire operating system that doesn’t work very well? I suffered with Vista for two years. I’ll probably put Windows 7 on the Macs once my antivirus program supports it, providing it is, indeed, better than Vista.
