file name too long try shorter name message – when name is NOT too long

Sometimes I get a message telling me that the file name is too long and that I should try a shorter name, even when the name I have used is definitely not too long or anywhere even close to too long.

I know this because there are many photoshop files that I have created with names twice as long as the rejected names.

Also, some files (only a few) that I have created and successfully saved with valid file names will not open and I get an "invalid file name" message.

This has not occurred often, but it does occur occassionally.

Any ideas? Thanks. I’m using 6.0

It may not be just the file name, it could also be the length of the directory names giving you problems

When speaking of length of filenames, you have to take into account the whole path. C:\Program Files\Photoshop\Data\My Project\two.psd is a longer filename than d:\data\two.psd. The maximum length of a full path to a file (including its name and extension) in Windows is 256 characters.

Additionally if using Save for Web and you have Mac and/or Unix compatibility checked, this places further restrictions on both name length AND characters that can be used. With this option enabled filenames have to conform to the restriction of all 3 platforms (and what is legal in a URL)

AHA!!! I never knew that. Thank you Len. So the problem is that I am deep in nested folders with long names – not that the name I am giving the actual file is too long. Who would have thunk it?
