It seems like the word contrast is sometimes used
for the opposite appearance: like ‘not enough contrast’
can mean that the gamma needs to be stretched or
the gamma needs to be compressed…

Do you get the same kind of input when people talk
about ‘contrasty’ pics?

Open a photo and go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Slide the Contrast slider back and forth and note the differences. That is the Photoshop version.

Now in design, contrast can mean something else entirely. Contrast here means being strikingly different, whether referring to the type, size, color, spacing, thickness, texture, etc. Contrast makes your work visually interesting. Contrast that is too weak is called "conflict" and should be avoided. For contrast to work, it must be used liberally.

I do know what you mean and I’ve got a lot of experience adjusting photos and a degree in graphic design, but I still get confused by the every day usage of the words "too much contrast" and "not enough contrast" applied to the same photo. I don’t really get confused; I just don’t know what they are talking about until I see the photo.
Sorry, this is just kind of a rant. I didn’t meant to waste any time.

It might be someone just trying to use the lingo of the trade without really knowing what they’re talking about. I would ask them to elaborate a bit for clarification.
