I am fairly new to Photoshop and am having a problem I can’t seem to find an answer for. After opening an image and trying to add text, the text that appears on the image is extremely small even when I set the font size to 72. This happens whether I just click on a spot to enter the text or create a text box. I realize there is probably a simple solution but can’t seem to find it. This is happening with My Photoshop CS2 and the rest of the family’s Photoshop Elements 4.0. Is this a photoshop setting or a Windows XP setting that is causing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Cross

When you set the font size to 72, it will be about 72 points high (including ascenders and descenders), by default (i.e., unless you set a different unit like px). A point is 1/72 of an inch (unless you have the alternative value set, which is 1/72.xxx inch). The "inch" used for sizing fonts is based on the image size you are editing. So, if you have an image from a digital camera that is 2000 x 3000 px, with resolution set to the default 72 px/in, your image will be treated as though you intend to print it at 2000/72=27.78 x 3000/72=41.67 inches. A 72 point line of type is going to be very small on such an image.

If you change the px/in resolution of your image from 72 to 300, which is a resolution commonly used for printing, by Image > Image Size in Photoshop (probably something similar in Elements), uncheck resampling, typing 300 into resolution, your image pixels will be unchanged at 2000 x 3000, but your image size will now be targeted to print at the size 2000/300=6.67 x 3000/300=10 inches. So if you put a 72 point line of type on this image — the very same image as before — your 1 inch high line of type is now a large design element.

Double click the Text layer icon in the layers pallete, this will select the text you have already typed. Then you can move, change the size, colour, font of the text you have inputted. Sometimes, changing the size of the text after you have typed the original text only changes the size of the text from the time of change.
