paths as selections

Hey people
When I make a path with the intent of converting the path into a selection, I run into two problems. From the 3rd anchor point of the path the area fills between those points with the color from the color swatch. This makes ‘masking’ futile. If I convert that path into s ‘selection’ in the paths palette anyway, the ‘quick mask’ toggle does nothing. What am I forgetting?

When you select your pen tool to create a path, look in the options bar. Choose Path on the upper left hand side. That way, nothing is filled or anything, it’s just a clean path that you can later load as a selection.
