I installed PS 7 for the first time on XP and got this when opening PS. It said "You currently have Adobe Photoshop’s primary Scratch and Windows’ primary paging file on the same volume, which can result in reduced performance. It is recommended that you set Adobe Photoshop’s primary Scratch volume to be on different volume, preferably on a different physical drive.

What is this and why is it happening please? I have 3 hard drives. One 120gig data drive, on 40 gig with 98se, and one 20gig with XP Pro. This is a 98se and XP Pro dual boot machine, but yes, the OS’s are on different HD’s. I did at one point have PS 7 installed on the 98se on the 40gig drive, but that has been uninstalled. Not sure what to do with this. Seems to be operational but I do not want to run into problems later. Thanks for the help.

It’s just a suggestion. PS uses it’s scratch space A LOT, so having it on a different drive to your Windows paging file can only help performance. Those of us with a single drive don’t have the choice …

To make the message go away, Edit|Preferences|Plug Ins and Scratch Disk. Set the scratch drive to any drive but Startup.

FYI – Recently, my copy of Photoshop 7 went crazy on me! It went through the normal start-up sequence, but when it came time for the little window to vanish and my document to appear… nothing; PS was no longer running. It drove me crazy and my only solution was to just survive with the copy on my other machine. Then, the same thing happened on the other machine! I tried everything… un-install, re-install, clean the registry, re-install windows. Finally, I found the solution… delete the preferences file. Just hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift during start-up, say ok and everything’s back to normal. Whew!

Just make sure that you don’t set the scratch disk to "startup". No matter if it’s C or D or whatever. You won’t get the message.

Ideally, you want the scratch disk on a separate physical drive, but it doesn’t matter much. As long as it doesn’t say start up, you won’t be warned. <shrug>

I just installed PS7 on my system today, and encountered the same thing. Is this "Scratch volume" similar to a clipboard (on PSP)? I only have one hard drive, so is there any other option (besides getting another drive, LOL)?

The other option is not to worry about it. Most people have one hard drive and they get by just fine. For the ultimate performance you need 2 drives [and plenty of RAM etc.].
