Saving .JPG or .TIF pictures

Hi,

I just bought a new camera and I’m trying to download pictures in Photoshop (5.0).

When I made some changes yesterday, I noticed that the initial size of my pictures just smelt !

For example :
initial size 4 mg – after saving 438 Kb
initial size 14 mg – after saving 47 Kb

How does it come ?

After re-opening the pictures, I could see that the initial quality of it just disappeared !

Can somebody help me ?

Does PS mean PostScript ? Sorry, but I’m quite new in the Photoshop world

what i do is copy my pictures over to the hard drive, then immediately – BEFORE opening PS or any picture editor – check the read only box in the proporties for the files. That way there’s no chance of me saving over them by accident. If I try I get a message telling me the file is write protected and it serves as a reminder to save under a new name/format.
