Hi

I am using photoshop 7. Recently after an automatic update, my layers palette stopped opening correctly. Now when it opens there is no label and no way to move it around because the colored panels at the top are missing. Does anyone know how to return my software to working order? I have tried reloading it but that does not help.

Cordially,

Mark Kinney

Recently after an automatic update

7.0.1 was the last update – years ago.

Make sure you have that. Reset your prefs as Ed advised. (See the FAQs)

Then turn off "automatic updates". There ain’t gonna be any more. 🙁

HI Ed Thanks for the quick reply. I was not sure how to trash preferences, so I went into help and it told me to:

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop or ImageReady. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

When I tried that, nothing happened.

How would you trash preferences?

Thanks for the help.

When you say nothing happened, do you mean there was no dialog or there was and you clicked Yes and nothing happened?

Do it again, or find the .psp file as per the Help instructions.

Hi Ed

I followed up since your email. I have tried the alt+ctrl+shift and nothing happened, no dialogue and no evidence of any change in the screen. Then I looked at FAQ and searched and found the pref file and deleted it. I then closed photoshop and opened it again and the problem remains the same. Some searching of the issue shows that neither the layers or channels palettes work properly. They do not stay open (no check within the windows dialogue box, and both open without complete window.

Any further ideas?

Pop up a screen shot so we can take a look. Just screen cap it and post it somewhere, then tell us the link.

Mark,

I then closed photoshop and opened it<<

Close Photoshop BEFORE deleting the prefs file – otherwise when you close Photoshop it will just re-write the old one.

Hi Yrbkmgr and Len

Your last suggestion of closing photoshop first and deleting the file seems to have worked. Hurray!!

Thanks.

From the FAQ:

Hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting Photoshop.

From Photoshop Help:

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop or ImageReady. You are prompted to delete the current settings.
