Losing files while using CS2

I have recently run into an intermittent problem using CS2. I have opened a JPEG file in CS2. Done some adjustments and then went to save it. When I said Yes to save the modified version, the program came back with a message that the file was locked and that I need to go to Windows Explorer- Properties to unlock it. The only option at that point was to say OK. The file disappeared completely. It was not to be found in the folder nor the Recycle Bin. This has occurred twice, once in CS and once in CS. It really concerns me. Fortunately, I had made a copy of the entire folder before starting my work process and also had the original files on my storage card.
I run a Win XP with 2 Gig RAM. Any ideas what is going on ? I have owned CS2 for over a year and CS for about 2 years and never encountered this before.

Did you ever have PS 7 on that machine? If so, search for psicon.dll and rename it psicon.dll.old.

Bob – I do not understand why that would matter. I have been using CS2 for a year ( and CS longer than that) with that file in place and now out of the blue it starts creating havoc with my images in an intermittent fashion ? I’ll try it but what does that file do or control ?

Search the forum for psicon.dll for details. In short, it’s the dll that allowed Windows explorer to show PSD previews.

Unfortunately there’s bugs in the O/S that can cause just what you’re seeing and it can pop up at any time.

Sorry for jumping in but this is related. I want to see the PSD’s in Win Explorer.

I use PS CS and have all my prev CDs. Should I add that .dll to CS in view of the above. I am not a heavy user, just photo editing. Thanks

Not unless you want to risk losing your work.

JK,

There are registry entries involved as well. If you *really* want to risk the associated problems a search of this forum on psicon.dll will pull up a number of threads at least one of which details the registry entries, but your easiest method would be to re-install Photoshop 7

Thanks guys, I’ll leave it alone. Viewing in explorer was nice in PS 7 but I can live without.
