When I use any brush the color stays on white. I can change the fore/background color but that doesn’t seem to change anything. For instance, If I changed the foreground to black and selected a brush, the brush would still paint white.

DaveM22…

Could you please turn off your autoquoting and your signature while you’re posting to the AdobeForums.com forums with your NNTP client?

People here get a little testy about that.

Thank You.

Well it must still be under guarantee. I’d just contact Adobe Customer Services and ask for a refund.

double check to make sure you haven’t set the color settings to black and white.

and your brush is set to ‘normal’ mode and 100% opacity?

sometimes if the brush is set to say… lighten, it will make things white no matter what color you have picked

Josh. I only asked because PS7 is three versions and several years old now. It’s pretty well impossible to buy a legal copy of PS7, so you should be aware that unless you were given the whole works, box and all, and the paperwork to register it, you’ve been given a pirated copy.

14 or not, you are very likely using an illegal copy.

Now so far as I am concerned, if it gets you on the learning curve, and you leave school, get a job and buy a pukka copy of the latest version, Adobe have got you as a new customer – for life.

It’s just that they might not see it that way.

Okay. To your problem.

* First port of call: Reset the Preferences. It tell you how to do this in the FAQs at the top of the Photoshop Windows forum. A duff prefs can cause all sorts of problems.

* Second port of call: Download the 7.0.1 update. It’s pretty much essential.

* Third: Learn, enjoy and become a great Photoshopper. 😉

Chris.

thanks chris. but about the pirating thing, would it be possible to buy it anywhere legally? i don’t think my dad would try to pass a gift as expensive when he really just got it free?

I doubt he’d have got it for free.

It is possible some dealers are selling off old stock. But if it was new unregistered software it would have come with the documentation so you could register it with Adobe.

If that’s the case, you should do so straight away. That way you’ll be able to upgrade at a later date to the latest version (currently version 9 AKA CS2) for a fraction of the cost of the full package. Typically £145/$$ instead of £650/$$.

If it is a pirated version, buying over the internet is a dangerous thing to do. By that I mean entrusting your credit card details to ruthless people. After all, if they see no wrong in stealing someone elses software, they’ll see no wrong in running amok with Jo Public’s credit card number. 🙁

Did you try resetting the Tool? Up by the little Brush icon on the Options Bar there’s a little black triangle dropdown. Choose Reset Tool from the menu that comes down

Hard to believe that Resetting Preferences did nothing. Are you sure you followed the instructions correctly? Did you get the dialog asking if you wanted to set Preferences to Default?

This is not a chat room. Posting every few minutes will not help you. It only annoys people.

Dude…stop bouncing the bloody thread. You’re starting to act like an annoying puppy jumping up on the guests. People have lives, you know!

Read the FAQ entry again.

You have to be QUICK with the Prefs-Ditching keyboard combo.

If you don’t see the dialogue box asking you whether to delete them, you weren’t fast enough.

OK, you can act that way all you want.

We know you’re anxious for answers.

But Ed and I both were trying to clue you up about how people behave in these forums.

We’re all unpaid users, just like you. That’s why it’s called a "User to User" forum.

If you want to be an annoying and ungrateful little putz, you might find that the roster of folks willing to answer the bazillion questions you’re likely to have as a new user quickly shrink to, ummm…none.

You get what you give, son. And just remember you’re dealing with some folks here who’ve been online since before you were even born, and a bunch who can answert just about any question you might have.

Soooo, you can care as little or as much as you want.

You can act like a teenaged jackass and confirm the stereotype, or you can act like a mature person and accept the learned advice offered to you.

Your choice.
