I am creating images that are similar to panels in a comic book to be used on web. I begin with b&w line art in Illustrator, then bring the art into photoshop and add web-safe color using the paintbucket tool as well as airbrush. These are saved as Photoshop documents with layers and eventually exported as .gif files to be used on internet. They are saved at about 3" square and 72 dpi.
The original black lines from my Illustrator document get very fuzzy and jagged. Is there a way to keep these lines clear and sharp? The fuzziness tends to make the entire image look somewhat fuzzy. The size and resolution of images were dictated by my client so I don’t think I can change them.
Thanks to all respondants.

Turn off dither in the Save for Web interface. Also, you dont need to mess with ‘web safe colors’ any more. Those are from the days of 256 color displays – centuries ago in computer speak.

If you’ve reduced your original artwork to 216×216 pixels from a much larger original, you’ll need to resharpen it before saving for web.

Also, be sure to use "Bicubic Sharper" when downsizing images.

In many ways, you’d be better off creating the artwork at its destination size and resolution.
