Set guides at 50% vert and horiz. Snap to Guides ON.

When you move the object in "transform" mode the centre of the image should snap to the intersection of the guides.

A bit quicker:

With the move tool selected click in the Options bar on Align Vertical centres followed by Align Horizontal centres.

That can also be made into an action, I think. Why Photoshop doesn’t just have a "Center On Canvas" feature I don’t know.

On Quicker Still… 😉

When dragging from one image to another with a larger canvas, just hold shift as you drag and drop.

Going through the clip board to a new layer just does it on its own.

As Bill says, but remember to deselect before pasting.

The last three don’t help if the object is already there.

True, but the OP didn’t say it was, so…

There is also a Centre Layer script for CS & CS2

Sure. Select, Copy, Paste. Then trash the original. Paste always creates a new layer with the object centered exactly.
