Is photoshop faster with an intel or amd processor or about the same. I am comparing like a 2.6 intel with a 2600 barton AMD

1 gig DDR 400 ram.

Difficult to get an unbiased opinions.

Any opinions you get, you will be most likely find if not convincing or leave with you unanswered queries.

If you can be convinced by the opinions given in one or two postings – chances are you have already have that preference even before you posted the questions.

Well, the point behind AMD’s rating system is to indicate what a given chip would be comparable to from Intel…

So basically a 2600 Barton should be the ‘same’ speed as a Intel P4 2.6 – so long as the program isn’t using code optimised for that chip.

It varies so much with the system and how Photoshop is being used that is hard to say. A few actions are noticeably faster on one platform or the other. For the vast majority, it makes no real difference. Get the faster processor you can afford, with lots of the fastest RAM you can buy, and use 7200 RPM disks with 8 MB cache.

The things that increased my Photoshop speed more than anything else were: – replacing all my hard drives with big 7200, 8mb cache models (the 8 mb makes a huge difference)
– going from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM
– dedicating a hard drive as a scratch disk.
– using a dual processor vs a single processor.

Interestingly enough, my dual P3 1 GHz w/ 2 GB RAM at home is significantly faster than my Dual P4 Xeon 1.8 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM at work.

The 8mb of disk cache is transparent to the user though, it’s simply a buffer for the ‘high’ transfer rate of 150mb/sec harddrives – which is what actually affects the speed…

Also of note, for all intents and purposes, a P4 is slower than a P3 at the same clock speed, so it’s no surprise your home machine seems faster when there is only an 800mhz difference.

I understand that when Intel went to the P4 they dropped support for some of the graphics drivers that speeded things up.

There was an article in Maximum PC. will see if I can find it.

Only if your closing and reopening files on a regular basis. When opening a graphic for the first time in a given period, the harddrive buffer has no relevance on speed… The buffer simply stores recently accessed files.

In most applications the 8 mb cache makes no diff, but when you are regularly opening 50-100 mb files, it makes a huge difference.
