Maybe this is a silly question, but I’d like your guys advice. Do most pro’s use the sharpening tools in photoshop, or do they use 3rd party plug in software? and if so, which ones are reccomended?

thanks.

FWIW, I’ve never use a sharpening plug-in, always stuck with what’s in PS

Me too.

There’s not much that can’t be done with the built in tools if you take the trouble to learn how to use them.

Most 3rd party plug-ins just make life easier for those that can’t be bothered.

I use Photokit Sharpener. Speeds up work considerably. With a lot of images I can’t spend an hour on each one of them.

PK is a sharpen workflow. It compensates for interpolation blur in a camera file, then one can accent-wise sharpen details, and finally sharpen for output. This prepares a file for print or web.

All this can be done with native Ps sharpening, as C.N. and J.J. wrote, (otherwise PK couldn’t do it either) but it takes too long when you have a bunch of them to do.

A FREE substitute for PK sharpener can be found here: < http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/TLRProfessionalSharpenin gToolkit.htm>

Note that it’s a script and works only with CS2.

I use Ultra-Sharpen, but then I made it so I am biased!

As a side note I do believe that everything one needs to do proper sharpening is in Photoshop. The question you have to decided for yourself is do you want to spend 20 minutes implementing the various complex and better sharpening methods or have a plug-in to do most of the work for you in less than a minute or two. For me the use of a plug-in is seldom because it does something that can’t be done in Photoshop as it is, it is about the best way to do the best job but as fast as possible. When you have a 130 or so images to sharpen the last you want to do is spend 20 minutes doing each one.
