I am photo retouching. I have a closeup of a face, and the skin is is smoothed to take out blemishes. However, it looks "plastic". I want to add texture to it so that it looks like real skin.

I created a seamless texture from another face, which has pores. I made it a grayscale image and want to use is as a bumpmap to add pores to the smooth face. However, I want to keep the colors of the smooth face, and only affect the luminosity channel using the texture.

Q: How do I add pores to a skin using a grayscale bump map, while preserving the color of the original photo? I just want to break up the unrealistic smoothness of the skin.

Presumably, you worked on a copy of the background layer.

One way of making the retouch more realistic is to simply reduce the opacity of the retouched layer.

Another method is to add a layer mask to the retouched layer and selectively paint on the mask with a low opacity soft-edged brush to allow some of the underlying layer to show through. the beauty of this method is in that you can vary the effect to allow more texture to show on areas of the face with fewer blemishes.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I got good results with your method, thank you. I grabbed a piece of skin texture from another photo in which the model has good skin, and used it in overlay mode at low opacity (10%) selectively until I was happy. Now my model has both nice smooth colored skin and pores texture to make it look realistic. I am happy, thank you.
