Cannot select square–only rounded corners. Please help!

As a new user, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I have chosen the SQUARE selection tool, not the elliptical. Whenever I select anything, the corners are automatically rounded. I do not want rounded corners–I want a square selection. How do I set this?
