Photoshop slowdowns on network with redirected application data folders

Hi, We recently installed the CS3 suite onto our school workstations. The problem we are having is that students are getting slowdowns in Photoshop in terms of waiting for menu drop downs and general unresponsive behavior. The applications are installed locally on the computers but the application data folders for the students are redirected to the main file server. As more students use Photoshop (>16) the slowdowns become more noticeable. Sniffing the network packets we are seeing a large amount of small files being opened and closed back to the application data folder on the server. I guess my question is, is there any way to force photoshop to use a local application data folder for all users? The network & file server they are writing to is quick but I suspect not quick enough for all of these small files.

Workstations: XP Sp2 Core2 Duo 2.33ghz 2Gb RAM

You have met one of the major flaws in Photoshop CS3.

This behaviour slows the application down severely when any involvement of a network occurs. The commonest example is printers. Many users have to avoid having a networked printer as default and, because of the way XP treats printers, even local printers attached to the user’s computer can cause severe slow-downs. The cure in this case is to make a generic printer driver the default.

I know this is not your problem but in my opinion it is due to the same flaw in Photoshop and probably also related to the introduction of the Bonjour service with CS3.

Please tell me you aren’t trying to put the scratch files on the server.

Ok thanks for the advice, I will set a local printer as the default and see if that helps, Was hoping for some magical reg key!

And here I thought Adobe did care, the amount of phone home traffic being generated when we looked at the network packets was impressive 😉

The scratch disks are set to the local volume BTW
