My son (16) has started learning Photoshop 7 and he seems to be really interested. I want to buy a tablet for him but I have no experience with such devices. I made a research on Internet and I’ve found that WACOM is the leader. I guess that I should not invest too much and buy too big format because he’s a beginner. I guess I should by A6 or A5 (right?). However, I have to decide between Graphire3 and Intuos2 models. I would very appreciate any advices related to the following questions:

1) Money wise, which investment would be better:
a) change from Graphire3 to Intuos2 when the format is constant
b) change from A6 to A5 when the device type is constant

2) Is the format A6 really usable or is it too small and I should buy a larger one?

3) How useful is the tilt sensitivity feature in Photoshop 7? Is it a good reason for change from Graphire3 to Intuos2?

4) Is it a good idea to go a risky-way with cheaper (much cheaper) device like Aiptek HyperPen 12000U?

Thanks a lot for any tips in advance.

All I can give you is my experience. I bought the Graphire small size and it is enough room for me. Less distance for my hand to move in order to cover the screen.

I think it’s a good starting point for him – if he sticks with Photoshop and wants more bells and whistles, then consider the more expensive model.

Every time this thread appears the vote is unanimous to pop for at least the graphire and not cheaper brands.

I use a triple display and my little graphire never, ever, feels to small. I love this tablet. One swing of the wrist and I go from the left of he left monitor to the right of the right monitor.
On a larger tablet I would probably have a painful shoulder at the end of the day!
A friend bought an Aiptek not long ago and returned it because he found it awful.

Especially as he’s learning the Graphire is an excellent choice. I bought the predecessor to that, the ArtPad II years ago and I’m still using it. It’s well built and I think the only reason I’m going to have to upgrade is that I finally think I need A5 rather than A6 and anyway, it;s going to be increasingly difficult to get a computer with a serial port πŸ˜‰

4) Is it a good idea to go a risky-way with cheaper (much cheaper) device like Aiptek HyperPen 12000U?

No, no, and thrice no ;–)

Unfortunately this is one market where (Although they are overpriced) you get what you pay for. The reason Wacom can charge what they do is that they are the only make worth having.

Thanks a lot for any tips in advance.

I would buy the graphite and Intuos and return
the Intuos if he isn’t thrilled with it. Having a really good tablet might give him the tools he needs to
be really good an keep interested. As far as size
is concerned, I used to have an 8×10 MAC pad,
and now I’m much happier with 4×6 approx working
area and I don’t use nearly all of it. The new Graphire
is much improved over the old, so much that I wish
I had tried an Intuos to see if is as much better over
the new Graphire. Good luck.

Thank you very much to everybody for real help.

We decided to start with Graphire3. There is not so bad price on www.amazon.de (only 89 euro for Classic) and the device seems to be improved comparing to Graphire2.
