ok i’m running a HP dv5 with Vista home premium sp1
amd turion 64 dual core
3 gigs ram
250 gig HD
ati radeon HD 3200 graphics card.
Anyway on with the problem, i just recently installed photoshop cs3 and every time i double click the short cut the photoshop opens up but it just comes up "not responding" i’ve tried setting as administrater, running with compatability with XP SP2 but it just keeps saying not responding. Anyone got any solutions?

Is it "not responding" or crashing – those are very different things!

Does Photoshop display anything before it says "not responding"?

yeah it opens up but it just stops after that.

"it opens up" could mean anything.

Is it locking up or crashing (again those are VERY DIFFERENT things)? What is shown on screen when that happens?

The most common lockup causes are printers that can’t be contacted, bad scanner drivers, corrupt fonts and corrupt color profiles.

photoshop "opens up" meaning IT OPENS THE PHOTOSHOP WINDOW. it comes up with file edit etc etc etc and a gray screen and sometimes it opens the serial number registration and then if i click next it stops responding and i have to ctrl+alt+del with task manager to close it.

installed straight from the disc so i doubt anything is corrupted, i tried plugging in my printer, nothin happened.

OK, at that point about the only thing that could cause Photoshop to hang is a corrupt font — it hangs while trying to create the font previews in the background.

So your original topic name "CS3 crash on startup" was incorrect: no crash, and it was well after startup.

ok… so how do i fix it?

Temporarily move all but the system fonts out of their directory to see if one of them is causing this.

Then, a couple at a time, return them until the problem is back.

I understand if you select all fonts in there for removal, Windows will prevent the system fonts from being deleted.

I never tried it but someone may confirm.

If not, the M$ site has lists of system fonts.

True. A little paper-clip guy comes rushing in blowing a whistle and waving a yellow card.

You can’t delete a system font, and if you try to move it, the option is grayed out. At least, it’s so if you do it from the control panel.

the M$ site has lists of system fonts

….and that list has become very long lately. What are they using them all for?

ok, and remind me… how do i move the system fonts out of which place where? the actual windows fonts or what?

Kyle,

It’s not the system font that you should move, I’m pretty sure they’re ok.

Move the added ones. Try to isolate the culprit by moving half of them.

I am having the same problem with photoshop CS3 crashing. But how do you change the font situation when you can even get it to open up?

Elaine,

You don’t have to open Photoshop. You manage fonts in Windows (Control panel > Fonts). You move, delete or add fonts there. Leave the system fonts, but move the others in batches of half until you’ve isolated the problem font.

How can I tell the system fonts?

If you’re on Vista, the system fonts are locked and can’t be moved or deleted, so that’s pretty safe. On xp, you should check first. Do a google search for "xp system fonts", or go to Microsoft’s site.

Note that I have no idea if your problem is a bad font or something else. Re-read the thread to see if it applies to your situation.

I have and I am going through the same identical thing. I do have Vista and I will definitely do that, because I spent all last night going through the process of software reinstalling only for it not to work, and you know of course I’m on a very tight deadline due today.

Ok, good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Elaine, regarding the deadline, a temporary fix might be to un-check the font preview in preferences.

If that helps, you can do the font troubleshooting later.

Here’s another way I had bookmarked, but forgotten. Haven’t tried it, though:

Freeagent,

Well I went home yesterday and started removing fonts and when I finished the 1st section, I was able to log back into Photoshop and I was also able to finish my project and meet deadline.

Thanks

That’s great, Elaine 🙂

I am having the exact same problem and cannot seem to find a resolve. i have tried the admin thing as well as copying the cd to my hdd, changing compatibility and everything else on the web, i think i am seeing 1 common denominator though, ati graphics, i have the hd 3200 hyperdrive as well, i have even d/l the latest drivers and software and still cannot fix this bug. it does seem as though most poeple experiancing this issue have ati graphics. and this same program works great on my desktop running xp.
