Are there any tips to optimize memory usage for CS4 ?

If you can squeeze in a second hard drive to use exclusively as PS scratch disk, that goes a long way.

Leave the RAM allocation at the default setting of 55%.

Actually, in CS4 the default is 70%.

Aha, thought that was just the 64 bit version.

In any case, with a low-powered machine (the OP says "minimal internal memory") it’s tempting to crank up the allocation, but that will only make matters worse. If "minimal" means a gig or so, 55% seems like a good place to start.

As Dave Milbut put it in another post, the way Photoshop’s memory management works these days, you should really consider the scratch disk the main memory, and RAM as a cache to speed things up.

Photoshop displays a recommended memory allocation. When I set it somewhere in the middle of the suggested range, it comes out at 70% (of 2GB).
