Why is it suggested that a film scanner, one that does only transparencies as opposed to a flatbed that also does film, is superior?

A film scanner does film and transparency.

There’s lots of reasons, the main one being the DMax value which is much higher with film/transparency scanners.

Then there’s the resolution as well, but that’s a secondary issue.

I haven’t looked at the new stuff in years, (and have less reason to now that I have a digital camera) but off the top of my head I’d say…

1. Quality.
2. Dust on film can be virtually illiminated by a film scanner ("digital ICE" on my old Nikon LS-2000)
3. Resolution and colour depth
