Hola! I need to know how to create a grayscale document that has color. Here’s the situation: I have to send an ad to a newspaper (one spot color is allowed). The ad is black and white except for the logo which is blue and white. The problem is that photo in the ad printed in a slight purple color (originally the photo was in color and I desaturated it to make it black and white). The newspaper requested that the entire thing be converted to grayscale except for the logo. Is this even possible? And if not, is there some way to get around it?

If you want spot color:

After converting to greyscale:

Or setup your grayscale file with a spot color channel. This will allow you to selectively add color to a grayscale image. You then save the file as a DCS 2.0 file and import into your layout program of choice.

You can also brush up on your CHOPS (Channel Operations) and make a process color file with the only color information present in the black plus one of the other channels (Cyan, Magenta or Yellow). You then send that file to the printer with the instructions that the Cyan channel (or whatever channel contains your color information) prints as your spot color.

Jennifer, I assume you are using PS. In the layers palette, make a duplicate of the background layer. Go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. The top layer will now be grayscale and selected. 1st way: choose the eraser tool and erase the logo. The background layer will show through as color while the rest of the image is gray. 2nd way: click on the mask tool. The mask will come in white. Choose the paint brush tool and with the foreground black, paint over the logo. Again the color will show through and the logo will be in color. Hope this is what you are after.

If the logo is on its own layer, then just Ctrl click that layer until the logo is selected. Then select the desaturated layer and hit the delete key. Same thing as above.
