I’m on a student’s budget, but I want to get a hard-wired optical trackball for a friend who has a Mac and who does illustration graphics with a mechanical trackball and Photoshop. I would like to get him a Microsoft Trackball Explorer like I have, but I’ve heard that Macs don’t have a right-click like PCs do.

Here’s the MS Trackball Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22& amp;type=ovr&pcid=a9fdd4c0-41da-4045-9d6f-f087c17ffd30 .
The left- and right-click buttons are on the left side, and the Back and Forward buttons are on the right side.
What do Mac users do with the extra right-click button?
Do the Mac drivers provide a use for the extra button?

How about the Logitech Marble Trackball:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRI D=2150,CONTENTID=5003

Or how about Kensington’s Orbit Trackball:
http://us.kensington.com/html/4771.html

Are any of these optical trackballs especially suitable for a Mac which is used for illustration graphics? My friend will be in the hospital for 3 months, and they won’t let him use a wireless device .

I upgraded from hardwire Kensington mechanical to Kensington optical. Very nice improvement with both tracking, and maintenance. There are four buttons which can be used in combination for 2 additional configurable choices. There is also a unique scroll wheel that works better than the usual.
However, it is a budget killer, but if you want to do pro work, it often pays to pay more. I got it on eBay.

Is this the one: http://us.kensington.com/html/2200.html ? New, delivered, it seems to run about $86. Maybe I’ll dream about it. 🙂

Yep, that’s the one. You can pick a new one up on eBay at auction for between $40 & $70 including shipping.

Well, whoever told you that was VERY mis-informed.

I use a Kensington 5 buttion mouse all the time.

And I have used the TurboMouse for years and now use an Expert Mouse.

Yes, they are not cheep.
Yes, they are great.

Is the MS Trackball USB?
Did you attempt to plug it in?
Is there a Mac Driver?
You did not mention whether it is OS9 or OSX, as these drivers are different.

Here’s the MS Trackball Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22& amp;type=ovr&pcid=a9fdd4c0-41da-4045-9d6f-f087c17ffd30
.
The left- and right-click buttons are on the left side, and the Back and Forward buttons are on the right side.
What do Mac users do with the extra right-click button?

What ever you want. As the right click is used in the OS and in many apps, it is very useful. Also the driver lets you pick what ever you want to.

Do the Mac drivers provide a use for the extra button?

Yes, for all the extra buttons..

And you have control over accelleration.

I had one a few years ago, and for some reason I didn’t like it. I cant remeber why ;(

Are any of these optical trackballs especially suitable for a Mac which is used for illustration graphics?

Yes, very useful!

My friend will be in the
hospital for 3 months, and they won’t let him use a wireless device .

Macs support nearly any mouse/track ball you attach to it. ‘

Go to www.apple.com. Click on made for Mac’s, click on input devices, trackballs. A list of hundreds., which leads me to believe nearly anything will work. One thing you will find with Mac, the OS supports nearly any peripheral. Other than scanners, I have found any device I have attached to my Mac has been supported natively with no additional software (including my HP Print Server).
