Vector Mask won’t link to Smart Object

When I apply a vector layer mask to a Smart Object the mask won’t link to the SO layer. Is there a way to force it to link?

I can’t resize or move them at the same time, which is driving me crazy.

Put the SO in a group. Link the mask to the group.

Or upgrade to CS4.
