I think the images are amazing and the process way ahead of its time. Not too many years ago I had an Amiga computer (anyone remember those?) that had a b/w security camera attached that used the same process to achieve color. The software was made by NewTek who went on to produce the Video Toaster and LightWave.

Fascinating link! The description of the digitising process is interesting – the images have been heavily massaged (presumably in Photoshop) to get them looking as good as they are. I liked the one of the group of children on the hillside where the littlest one obviously could not stay still for long enough between taking the images with the different colour filters! I can imagine the photographer cursing!

Richard Lynch’s The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 uses one of Prokudin-Gorskii’s images as an example for some of the techniques Richard teaches. The book also includes quite a bit of information on how the original image was made.

OT images be very complicated to develope 100 years ago. Talk of image processing today and you sophisticated tools like
