elements 6 cant set background on type tool

Using PS ele 6 when typing on pix I want to set background to a color or white and it never takes. What am I doing wrong?

I don’t have 6, but unless it is very different from previous versions, the Type Tool only creates the actual Text.

There is no background behind the Text. It can be any colour you choose, but it will just be placed on top of the existing image.

You need to create the contrasting background area first, and then put the text on top of it.
