I have an BFG 8600 GT OC w/512Mb RAM.
It is working fine with the nVidia 7.15.11.7824 version drivers.
I have the 8600 GT 1G RAM. My OGL features were not behaving properly until I updated to the latest driver 178.24 from Oct 15.
I periodically still receive the message that OGL is disabled. I need to change that in preferences and restart PS and I am good to go again.
There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to this behaviour. It’s a minor annoyance that I hope will be fixed.
Aside from this…love all the new features and improvements to bridge. ACR is worth the upgrade alone.

Driver 178.24 –> works on Quadro FX 5500, Win XP64 SP1 (with old GPU hack) and Quadro FX1400 Win XP SP3. MacBook Pro with 8600 generally works under OSX and Vista Ultimate SP1. I also have an older Quadro FX 1100, but have not done much testing on it lately. If I remeber, it also worked, but it may require the "Use old GPUs" registry hack as well. Might try pestering my colleagues with their GeForce 7300/ 7600 cards some day…

Diane: Who is the manufacturer of the card?
XFX 8500GT/256 working perfectly. I updated to 178.24 before installing CS4.
This from the big fancy box…
MSI ..PCI-E, 1024 M DDr, heatpipe, d-sub, DVI- I/HDMi ready
I don’t know too much about these things…had my local shop put this in when I had my system in for a cleaning etc.. I was impressed by the 1G and low price. I haven’t noticed a big difference in the system except that it got my OGL working. I’m in Canada btw.
I thought this would get me another year out of this system…now I want 64 bit and vista etc…..isn’t it always the way!

Differences between video cards from different manufacturers using the same chipset might help to explain why I can’t get PS CS4 to work properly with OpenGL Drawing enabled.
Vista 64
ASUS EN9600GT 512MB DDR3
Latest driver from this week, ie 178.24 (for Vista 64)
Larger images (by px and/or bytes) don’t display properly (just checkerboard) and PS CS4 closes if I try to do much, not that there’s really anything I can sensibly do when I can’t see the image.
Cheers, John

I was hoping that posters would go into Device Manager and get the actual driver version from properties/driver for their card. The driver version installed may be different depending on the card.
You mean 178.24 does not necessarily install driver version 7.15.11.7824?
Freeagent: It installed v. 7.15.11.7824 on mine, but is it the same for everyone?

Here too, but I see the point.
So, this could be a driver issue after all! That is what I was trying to find out.

I’m pretty sure 7.15.11.7824 is Vista and 6.14.11.7824 is XP
OK, here’s something.
Until now I’ve just been playing with the candy, but today I had to get some serious work done. Suddenly I noticed that the sliders in the adjustment dialogs felt "sticky" and not as responsive as they should. Adjust a Levels or H/S slider, and the little triangle would come bouncing after about a half second. Curves is OK, though.
I noticed that the lagging became less pronounced when the image got smaller on screen, and of course this rang a bell. So I disabled "OpenGL" in Preferences – and voila: Back to normal behavior. No more delays.
I then checked with brushes, but no problem there.
The images I was working on are 16 bit with a couple of alpha channels and layers, but nothing excessive, in the 100 – 250 MB range.
So, any more details I should post? Personally, I don’t mind changing this card as the fan makes slightly less noise than an airplane on take-off, but it would be nice to get to the bottom of this.
Freeagent: That lag with the sliders when you scrub really fast is something I’ve noticed for years, but I never paid it much attention. Having OpenGL off or on did not change anything for me, the lag is barely noticeable or I’ve just gotten used to the behaviour.
You’re probably right, Bart. I can live with it.
But just for the record, it disappears with OpenGL disabled, and it’s not present in CS3, which I still have on this system.

Everything else: nothing unusual about my system
Major bad performance with Open GL and any of the Advanced settings enabled
If I use the AllowOLDGPUS_On fix, enable Open GL, and disable all advanced features, then the brushes work okay (but still not as responsive as CS3), but dragging floating windows is very "sticky": they take about a 1 second delay before moving.
On the other hand, my Bridge CS4, which also uses the GPU, is probably twice as fast at refreshing, moving and zooming images than CS3. If only Photoshop was this way, I’d be ecstatic!
nVidia blames Adobe’s programming for this whole issue, and Adobe points at least one little finger back at nVidia. I wish they’d figure it out. The use of GPU is meant to improve performance, not muck it up.
GeForce 8600 GTS 512 MB works flawlessly with CS4 32-bit and 64-bit. Nvidia driver 7.15.11.7813 date: 9/17/2008

Intel Q9550 2.8Ghz (OC’d to 3.2Ghz)
I noticed in reviewing these posts that people having problems have less than 4GB of RAM in their systems.
Bart, maybe many have less than 4GB of RAM, but not me. Vista 64, 6Gb of RAM (don’t remember type), MSI P965 Platinum mobo, Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz x 2 CPU, ASUS EN9600GT video card with latest drivers (a few days ago) installed after uninstalling the previous drivers in safe mode.
I haven’t noticed brush problems, but redraws are slightly delayed and then slower than in PS CS3. Simple things like adding a layer mask or turning layer visibility off and on have a delay. The oldGPUon reg key seems to have reduced some of the delays a bit, but still nowhere near PS CS3 almost instant response.
Also, normal and large images won’t display (just checkerboard instead) unless I turn off ‘Use for Image Display’ in OpenGL Advanced settings (or of course turn off OpenGL Drawing altogether).
I’m sure there are other things, but that’s enough for a start.
That was just one thing I noticed, in your case I’ve seen this Asus card show up as one with problems before. Anyone else got an ASUS EN9600GT that is not having a problem?
I made some more progress with PS CS4 performance by changing the cache level. My zooming and panning have been fine (Vista 64, 6GB RAM, ASUS EN9600GT), but redraws have been slow and brush (and probably other things) a bit laggy. I also have to have Use for Image Display turned off to get an image display.
I had cache level set to 1 for accuracy of display. I set cache to 6 and restarted PS CS4. Display speed is now vastly improved, and layer masks appear almost instantly, all similar to CS3 display speed at a cache level of 1. CS3 with higher cache level is much faster again.
There’s still some slight lag for me in CS4 when using the brush (and probably other things). However, if my plugins work, I may at last be able to start using PS CS4 32 bit for real work instead of using CS3.
John: I have my cache level at 8.
Bart, after more checking, I’m finding even a cache level of even 2 rather than 1 makes an enormous difference to the responsiveness of redrawing, adding layer masks, etc for me in PS CS4. Anything higher than that will no doubt provide the other normal benefits of caching. I’m finding cache level 1 unusable with CS4, but cache level 1 for CS3 is quite ok.
As I use CS4 more, I’ll most likely fine tune the cache level.
I’m really liking the Adjustments pane in CS4. I have a bunch of panes open on my 2nd monitor, just like I always had a bunch of palettes open on my 2nd monitor with previous versions of PS.
Cheers, John
John,
I had the same experience with the cache settings in CS4
Paul
Paul, thanks for letting me know (and for prompting me to use these forums). It’s good to spread the word on ideas that might prove useful for others to try.
Cheers, John
Well even though this thread is about ‘graphic cards’ it just goes to show you how one setting like the ‘cache levels’ can have a big effect. I had read that upping the cache level made a difference in performance, so that was why I upped it right off the top.

Card #3 EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800GTX 512mb with 178.24 (10/15/08) Drivers. SUCCESS!!!! This makes CS4 rock.
(When all else fails, throw money at it!)
What do you think about the ASUS GeForce 9600GT 512 based upon NVIDIA chipset or the RADEON 4870 XT jan
I use a 4870 512 meg card and it works. I just have the slight lag issue. No problems like everybody else. Starting with the 8.10 drivers a owner can now adjust the card fan speed in CCC. This is great during the summer. Just make sure you connect both power connectors so you can select overdrive to check the fan option. but I guess you can read up on that. No big deal.
Stay away from the dual GPU units if your just using it for CS4. CS4 only sees one GPU. The card will work just the other GPU will be idle and not used thus a waste.
There is another 4870 that is out now the has one GPU with 1 gig of memory. A option to think about and the price is great too. But the card I have is just fine and works for me.
I’m not very good at adjusting the fan. A little beyond me. Since the system is being built by Puget Systems, I’ll speak to someone over there who is assembling the system and make sure to djust the fan speed. I think I’m going to get the geForce 9600 512mg. Have you heard about that one?
What does one mean by CCC?
Jan
Catalyst Control Center. It’s the control panel for all the card’s functions (although the card itself will work without it).
Catalyst Control Center is a real pain. As far as I could see it is totally superfluous to the working of the card and may even cause problems.
agreed. it just popped up on my laptop after my last update and it’s been a little wonky ever since…
So inotherwords, don’t bother using it. Correct?
if you can avoid it… yes.
My ATI card came with this computer nearly 4 years ago and still has the same drivers that came in the box. I plan to update them if something goes wrong.
Janice,
You don’t need CCC for the card to work. It mostly duplicates standard Windows functions. The only remotely useful thing about it is that you can (roughly) color correct your monitor – but any serious user will have that covered through monitor calibration anyway (and just in case that’s your next question – a Spyder2express sells for less than $100. You’ll never look back).
sorry, a little new at this. I use spyder 3 for color calibration and am very happy with it. Still going to use my LaCie electron 22 blue 1V which is great. Thanks for all the help
Jan
Still going to use my LaCie electron 22 blue 1V which is great.
ditto! love my lacie! 🙂
To Kati Tittel
I have an eVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE 7600GT 256mb with 178.24 (10/15/08) but PS CS4 worked with considerable lags (redraws, zooming, brush drawing, stamp tool, blur tool, changing opacity, any slider, etc). HDR crashes and photomerge will only work after a restart of CS4. Heartening to see that you solved the problem with a more modern card with 512 MB or memory. I hope to try this solution on my system when I get the $ together.

I just picked up a NVIDIA 8400GS 512MB ASUS card for $35 plus shipping from NEWEGG. I installed it today in my XP computer. I didn’t use the driver disk that came with it. I went to the NVIDIA site and down loaded the latest drivers. Its’s working just fine. So far no problems with any of the openGL features and it’s my impression that the whole system is running just a bit faster.
So Far So Good.
