I am a newbie to Photoshop. When I edit an image I have taken from a digital camera, some tools, such as the clone tool, do not seem to work. What am I missing?

Thanks,

Peter

I take it you’re talking about the rubber stamp?
Have you taken a sample first with the <Alt>-key?

For safety, you could first add an empty layer.
Then make the original the active layer, take your sample, activate the empty layer and start cloning.
Making a mistake? Throw away the added layer and start all over again.

This usually happens when you are on the wrong layer or using low opacity or working on an adjustment layer by mistake or in the wrong mode (though that shouldn’t happen with the clone tool) or a host of other reasons. For the clone tool, make sure the opacity is 100% and that you have checked ‘use all layers’ and that you’re not trying to clone on an adjustment layer and you should be OK.

Yes, I have taken the sample. I use <alt> and click. Then when I drag the cursor, it shows a crosshair in the corresponding place but it doesn’t change anything. Also happens with the eraser tool, it doesn’t erase! What am I missing?

Thanks,

Peter

Did you start cloning some distance away from the spot where you took the sample?

I think I clone some distance away, but I’ll have to check(Photoshop is at work). As for the layers, it is only one layer when I open the photo from the digital camera. I do know the opacity is set to 100%. What is this "wrong mode" that you mentioned?

Thanks to all,

Peter

Hi there.

Don’t know for certain, but it might just be that if you are using PS7, you could have imported your Camera Image at 16 bits, and only very few tools work on 16 bit images in PS7. Check Image > Mode, and if need be, change to 8 Bit.

Oh ok, I’ll try that. Thanks!

Let go again of the alt key before you start cloning. The crosshair suggests that it’s still down.

In the tool bare there is a popup for ‘Mode’. It should be on ‘Normal", not something else.
