Color Management Problem:
I am working with Photoshop CS and with an Epson 1280 Photo printer. When setting up for printing in the Print Preview in CS, I select color management and for the printer color profile I select the Epson 1280 profile. My monitor is properly calibrated. The instructive material shows to turn off the color management feature under the Epson driver software, so I select "no color management" under the Epson Print box. The results are terrible and the color is way off the monitor. When I take color management off of the Print Preview in CS and select either automatic or custom-ICM in the Epson driver software, the color is pretty close. I would like to use the Photoshop color management. Any suggestions?

The profile for printers within Photoshop’s Print w/Preview and from your printer driver would be two different profiles. Your best bet would be to let your driver handle it. That is obviously the profile you already have, and this way it will also be managed for printing from other apps. Your printer will also be able to adjust for paper type, etc.

If you really need to have a profile from within PS, you should get a printer profiling program and make your own.

I agree. I have the same printer. I set the the profile to Printer Color Management and tweak the Epson driver as necessary (which is rare).

Also know that within the Epson drivers, media type drives dot gain. Many users complain that the prints are too dark. When using photo glossy paper, I choose Photo Glossy Film and the prints are dead nutz most of the time… fyi.

I don’t agree. I think you get better results using the proper ICC profiles. You need to use the profiles for the actual paper you are using rather than the generic Epson profile which can give dreadful results. There are profiles available for Epson Premium Glossy and various other papers. Epson didn’t provide profiles for PC originally with this printer but Ian Lyons has made profiles for Epson papers available at www.computer-darkroom.com. Some other manufactures such as Tetenal provide their own profiles and these work very well for me.

Thank you for your responses. I was trying to use the Photoshop CS color management because it was recommend at the Epson Academy presentation over the Print (Epson) color management. I guess it is obvious that you can not use both at the same time. In any event, I will play around with the approaches suggested.

I select color management and for the printer color profile I select the Epson 1280 profile.

You are confusing the two types of profile. The Epson profile is simply a tweaked version of sRGB and as such is 100% incompatible with the No Color Adjustment mode. If you want to use this mode then it is necessary to use media type profiles. Epson did not supply the media profiles with the 1280, but it is possible to obtain them from their download site.

You can see an explanation of the various print mode options at:

This may sound very simple to most, however for some novices, it isn’t simple. I visited the Darkroom mentioned above, and downloaded profiles for the Epson 1280/1290. Now that I have them downloaded, how do I access them? The file extension doesn’t allow them to be viewed or loaded.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There are very straightforward step by step instructions on Ian’s site in the tutorial about printing from PS with Epson printers if you search around. They are very easy to follow.
