Hi
I have a photo which I want to email, however, it was taken at a high resolution and I would like to reduce its size\resolution so as I can email to friends on a dial-up connection without it taking all day to download. How do I go about doing that?

Using Photoshop 7 on WINXP

Use Outlook or Outlook Express, it will ask you if you want to shrink it first. It WON’T shrink the original. Test it by sending it to yourself.

a letter will come up with the files attached

I endorse all this, but suggest that you start by deciding how big you want your photo to be. If it’s a high-quality art photo, and you want to brag about it, up to about 900 wide by 600 high will show on a 1024 by 768 screen. But for most ‘happy snaps’ 300 by 450 is big enough. Load your image, and resize it, with ‘Resample’ ticked. Then, when you have selected ‘Save for Web’, choose the lowest quality which looks satisfactory on the sample image. This is rather subjective, and is very much dependent on the image. Don’t forget that you can enter a number instead of selecting a quality. The value you choose will have a big effect on the file size. With a rather attractive flower photo, size 300 by 434, I got:

Quality size result
Medium (30) 20.6K fair
Medium (45) 25.6K OK
High (60) 31.9K Good

I usually choose 45 or 60. And, whatever you do, don’t accept the offer to save changes after you have closed the Save for Web window. To be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to save it under a new name after resizing.
