I use Windows XP and Photoshop CS. Free space 20 GB in primary scratch disk and 10 GB in secondary.

The error message appears when I try to convert image (mode) to indexed color in order to prepare GIF files. Sometimes it has happened also when trying to enter text into dragged text-area. Neither of those functionalities cannot be used anymorethen until to next complete system re-install (hard disk has to be formatted, or new hard disk has to be added).

I’ve had similar errors long time already and have no guaranteed way to fix that. It usually happens about few months after reinstalled system. Usually when I have used Corel or Illustrator at the same time with Photoshop.

Sometimes it has helped when I’ve deleted the following directorie’s contents: Documents and Settings/my user/Local Settings/Temp/

At this time- no help- also tried to reinstall video card drivers, fix memory issues etc.

Any comments?

well- already managed to solve by holding Ctrl+Shit+Alt down while restarting PS and then deleted the settings file.

Thanks for the thread. I am experiencing the same issue as Jim. The difference is that I am running an action that prompts three different times during the action to save the file (different image sizes). TThe error is not exhibited until after the action has completed (all the saves have been done). It seems the actions runs fine, but once the action completes and the error is displayed I am unable to open any image until I restart PSE3. Peter’s suggestions prompted me to verify that I had merged the visible layers in my modified image before saving as a JPG (changed this in my action). I also ensured that the original was not read-only.

Don’t have a clue about exactly what causes the problem, but I do have a suggestion for your action.

If you aren’t already doing it this way, you should be Converting any .jpg files to tiff or PSD before running the action, then save a copy as jpeg at each size. This may not seem like much of a difference, but every time you save as a jpeg you recompress and lose more data, degrading the image. Making a copy from a resized psd or tiff will assure that the images don’t get progressively worse as they get smaller.

JimDunn, I mentioned the Elements forum because in #17, jrcarter said, "It seems the actions runs fine, but once the action completes and the error is displayed I am unable to open any image until I restart PSE3." If that’s not Photoshop Elements, what is it? I realize perfectly well that most of this thread has been devoted to CS2, but the PSE3 reference suggested that there was a tangent involved that ought to be taken to the Elements forum.
