16 bits to 8 bits

for some reason one of my 16 bit tif pix cannot be reduced to 8 bits! the 8 bit option is greyed out. i tried converting it to a psd but the 8 bit option was still greyed out. any suggestions how to get the 8 bit option back?

did you check what color space you are in?
some options grey out under indexed for example

did you check what color space you are in?
some options grey out under indexed for example

Impossible. 16 bits indexed color doesn’t exist. And if it would exist, going down to 8 bits would always work. There is no color model known to Photoshop that does exist in 16 bits but not in 8 bits.

happy to send to you an image of the screen where you can see where the image is 16 bits and the 8 bit is greyed out …

I’m sure you have that problem, but the color model of the image is not the reason. I think that the size (and hence the scratch disk warning) is where the problem occurs.

Are you sure that you are working in RGB mode or CMYK mode (exclusively)? Are you sure that the original color space is not broken into channels? Why don’t you put a link to that file on some website to see what’s there? You will save your time and ours!

Now that’s a real technique you force the OP to learn, cuz as long as s/he (I have no idea is PS is Male/Female) makes a copy of the file to JPG/GIF etc. then it won’t be nothing else but 8-bit
