Text with selected formating

PS 5.02• XP Home • 512 megabytes RAM • 17 gig free HD • Matrox Millineum G400

The text tool is now producing selected text as if with the magic wand tool. The text preview feature is disabled too. When I finally get it un-selected, the font color is red instead of black or what I chose. How do I return the normal mode for the text tool?

You have selected the Type Mask Tool instead of the Horizontal Type Tool. Click and hold on the small arrow by the type tool in the tool box so you will get the fly-out and be able to select the proper type tool
