I was trying to paste 12 square images in one big file in 4 rows of 3 pictures each. I made a blank file and am pasting the images, but can’t figure out how to paste on one single layer, so that I can move them easily. If I simply paste the images on the big blank file, it creates a new layer everytime. Any suggestions?

You cannot paste into one layer. Every time you paste you make a new layer.

Why do you want them to be in one layer? What makes you think that they will be easier to move around if they are in one layer? If you have multiple layers and you link them in the Layers palette, they will move as one.

You can merge the layers if you really want them all on a single layer, but I’m a bit unclear why you want to do that. What advantage will you have if you make them all be on the same layer?

Just make sure you save a duplicate file to work with, because once you merge, you’re done.

If each image is in its own layer, then it can be moved relative to the others easily. That is why PS creates the new layer, so that it can be moved.

If they are all the same size why not just put them in a folder, and then use File > Automate > Contact Sheet and let PS do it for you. Set the columns to 3 and rows to 4. At the end, once they are all positioned as you want, "Flatten Layers".

Thanks everyone for help. I thought it d be easier to work when each small figure can be independently moved and processed on one layer because then I will not have to go to that specific layer everytime. May be it was asking for too much, or I thought it d be possible because thats how I do in Apple iWork Pages (where the object can be selected and moved by clicking it)

I liked the contact sheet automator verymuch. I wanted a particular order, but that can be easily done by giving names in alphabetical order, like putting a , b etc in front of the images. Now my question is, IS there a way to get rid of the file name below each image in the contact sheet?

sorry for asking the question without paying too much attention. I found the checkbox which allows you to keep or remove the filename as the caption. Alpesh

This can be done in PS to,…just activate "autoselect layer" et voila

I find one problem with the contact sheet. Although it has fields for the vertical and horizontal gaps, a wide horizontal gap is ALWAYS present, even if you put zero (the gap where normally the filename would be present). Since I need a very small gap between the square images (both hori and vertical), I have to move all (but the top 3) images upwards.

Is there a fix for this?
