changing from photoshop format to jpg

hey im new to photoshop and editing pictures. i am having trouble changing the picture format from .psd to .jpg it will not let me keep and or change the format to jpg while saving. is there a way you can change it before saving or keeping it the same? when i import it its a jpg file already but when i save it changes to psd. if anyone can hlep that would be great. i am using image ready 7.0

If you have been making layers in the image, you will have to save it as a psd, because that is the only format, that understand photoshop layers.

If the image is for the web, go to file/save for web, and you will get a jpg copy optimized for the web. Otherwise go to the layers menu and merge the image to one layer.

You really should keep the PSD file for later reediting, if needed and save the JPG as a copy.

If you’re using Image Ready, you need "Save Optimized As" – not "Save As" – to make a jpg.

Just a note, TIFF and PDF can preserve layers also.
