Senario…
One of my clients, (a Pro photographer) asked me to upgrade his (92%full) hard drive. I replaced a Maxtor 40 gig drive with a WD 120 Gig one and track by track transfered all his data to the new drive. I’ve done it a hundred times with no problems. No problem reactivation Windows XP, I did it over my broadband link. When the client got to his office and tried to start Photoshop CS, it cracked up and wanted to be re-authenticated too.

Client phoned me and I told him to do it over the Internet. Nope… PC is not on the ‘net. OK then, just phone Adobe and do the numbers thing. Now this is where it gets interesting. Adobe said in a press release that they would never failt to authenticate a legitimate copy of CS and if they had problems there were safeguards in place.

Lies, all lies. Adobe in Australia use an Indian speaking call centre. Presumabely this is in India and the lines between Australia and India wouldn’t connect all afternoon today. The numbers keyed in to the phone failed to extract an authentication code… Hold please while we transfer you to an operator… nothing… Just silence and there is no one to scream at.

Client now askes me how much Corel 12 Suite is because he is not going to shell out $1400 for a program and put up with this crap too. I know from other clients who have gone back to PS 7, that his is not an isolated case and they are all legitimately purchased programs.

As for me? I have this day stopped stocking or offering Adobe products that require activation. Good one Adobe. I wonder how much you actually lose with this nonsense. Surely this much inconvience to your customers will drive them away in heards. Corel must be jumping for joy.
