A relative of mine asked for my help restoring a wedding photo – an 11×14 portrait from the ’70s, with the subjects photographed from the waist up, sitting, a bouquet of flowers positioned on their laps. Over the years the entire photo has turned magenta – very similar to the look of a digital pic taken on sepia – so the original color information has been lost. The man is wearing what I’m told was a gray pinstripe suit and a light blue striped tie. The woman’s dress is off-white.

What are my options for improving the look of this photo? Time is not a factor; the picture is not needed for anything in particular. They just would like for it to be preserved digitally and restored back to original *as much as possible*. The first thing I did was pull a scan of the photo into PS 7.0 and discard the color info. It makes quite a nice B&W, but they would love to have a corrected color image.

Any and all suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you.

Once you scan the image into Photoshop, make a copy of the layer and desaturate the copy. Use this one for the B&W. Keep the original and see what you can do with Photoshop’s color controls. Play with the tools in the top part of Image > Adjustments. Make another copy and try the "Auto" features and see what they turn out. Tweak as necessary or begin fresh with another copy. Keep the original layer to compare to when you show them the results!

If you can send me a smaller version or post it somewhere, I might be able to see what I can do with it.

Here’s some others’ photos I played with already:

My first experiment would be to darken the red channel
and blue channel in a proportion that would tend to nullify a shift towards magenta. It might be interesting to change to CMYK and play with the Magenta channel.

You should be able to shift the color in color balance or one of the other controls under adjust image.
