Just in case anyone else is thinking of getting a new A3 printer, this is the final result of my buying a Photosmart Pro B8350 and having a major run round by their ‘help desk’ jocks

Has anyone else hit this problem with them and have they found a driver which will work with this printer?

Hello Keith,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I understand that your printer is not printing from photoshop CS3 and ACDSee. I would like to inform you that your printer has only basic driver to support your XP computer so it won’t allow all the feature of your printer. As your printer has only basic driver so it will not print from photoshop CS3. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

You might consider posting an inquiry to one of the prnter specific newsgroups. Probably someone there has found a work-around or a better driver.

HP’s "help" [sic] is abysmal (to be kind)!

next time, do a google for your part number, then see what sort of opinion places [epinion, cnet] is in the result..

I’m only going with this one reply, but it matches your complaint. Actually it matches your complaint WITH the replies from HP. You didn’t specify machine or OS. Since it’s a relatively new [2007] printer, and one of their higher priced, unless windows recalls XP, or accelerates the retirement of XP, I’d guess HP will come out with a fix.

In the meantime, there is a fix, but you can’t print to the LARGEST available 13×19, the printer is capable of with the XP OS and the driver..

Again, you might check with HP before screwing things up and see if the HP920 driver will work with your OS, and printer.
Or get a MAC.

HP : have spent 6 months working and waiting for HP support to determine what is wrong with my printer. They replaced it once and just recently

HP : come up with a new one. They suggested that I use the HP920 driver in the mean time which does not support 13×19 printing. The printer
HP : works great on OSX and I had no problems getting it installed. Hp support agrees that the Windows XP driver is not working correctly so
HP : although I have a network with both types of computers, this printer will only do its best work with a Mac.

It took a year when Vista came out, [it obsolesced the PSC 2355v interface extras], but HP finally did get a Vista interface for the PSC 2355v. Made me very happy. But some things are just beyond their control.. ie: XP . Best they can do is TRY to keep up. And sometimes that takes time.

Meantime for your 13×19’s take them to Office Depot.

I love the high handed better than thou answers, but OK, I purchased the printer as a one off deal, so didn’t have time to do a check first.

Once I hit the troubles, I obviously ‘Googled’ and found the page you mentioned. Pointing the ‘help desk’ jock at that page perhaps saved me the 6months and reduced it to less than 6days.

By the time that I had bought the printer that comment was over 5months out of date. Add to that the 6months the Chap had been having the hassle, then I would have expected a company the size of HP to have sorted it.

are they telling you the "come with" XP driver is no good and to get their own driver from HP and install it?? and that it works but it won’t work all the features? what BULL HOCKEY and laziness, just a flip off to the people who bought it

what kind of printer can’t work with the most popular OP system out there? they are saying they only support Mac users? So buy an Apple or get a new OS like Vista?
and why buy a wide printer if you can’t use the max size paper? It says PHOTO in the name, it should print photos well!!

can you return it?? I use AMEX for purchases -they have a money back policy for lemon purchases, and double the warranty for any purchases. try your credit card company, sometimes they can get your money back

I use Epson and always have since I started computering
the standard XP drivers will print but the GUI shows none of the advanced settings and options as I get from the Epson drivers.

I think EPSON has good customer support so far, but I have no comparison.

I have had two breakdowns on two different printers and so far they quickly replaced them. In the first case with a newer better model than the one I returned. My 1270 worked forever, like 5 years without any problems and it prints photos badly now (striations not corrected with new ink) but on regular paper it is fine and my sister is still using it.

I am not usually so brand loyal but in this case, and most especially after hearing your tale, I will stick to EPSON. They have a good reputation for servicing the photo community not just the everyday consumer.

I bought one of their cheapo all-in-ones (OfficeJet 4315) to replace a simple Epson document printer that had finally gone senile.

Two issues:

1) Network sharing the printer did not work.

I could add a network printer, but it would not work correctly. I had an idea about how to solve it, but did not want to stick any forks into sockets in my attempt, so I called HP. It was horrible.

They were completely unable to break out of their diagnostic flowchart. They wanted me to change print cartridges, reinstall windows and all sorts of ridiculous, irrelevant crap that would have cost me time and money. To top it off, whenever they got to the end of their script, they would just declare that the problem was solved, or, that it was not /their/ problem.

They were very nice, but I just wanted to drive to India and choke the lot of them for being automatons. I tried the solution that seemed obvious to me, that they said would not work, and it worked.

2) Out of ink notifications.

There was really one big problem. Namely that when the print driver would make a notification that ink was low, it would somehow make it to a user account that was locked, but not active. For example, if I went into Bob’s account, then switched users to Sandy and printed, the queue would hang. Switching back to Bob’s account would present a dialog. Clickety-click and the printer would start the document.

Aggravating the scenario was that the low ink notifications were completely out of touch with reality. I think the black would start to bitch at 500 pages, but I could easily get 1500 pages before running into quality problems. They kept insisting that their ink levels were accurate because of some sort of inter-dimensional math that my monkey brain obviously could not grasp.

I just wanted tech support to tell me how to shut those dialogs off. They would insist that I needed to know when my ink was low, but would not believe/comprehend that the dialogs were useless in that endeavor. Damn, I’m still mad at how dense they were.

It got to the point where I would have to make them repeat their understanding of what I had said after every couple of sentences. 90% of the time they did not understand. Finally, #6 sounded like he understood, would talk to a real engineer, and promised to give me a call back the next day. He blew it off and didn’t even log the interaction. "James," if you’re reading this, I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE. Unfortunately, I only have it narrowed down to one country, a subcontinent really, so it may take some time to pinpoint you.

Ok, so I’ve taken this opportunity to vent a bit, but maybe there’s a tidbit in it for you, the OP. I ended up calling their executive customer support. I actually got to talk to an engineer who had the courage and knowledge to tell me that I was indeed fucked.

So, I didn’t get a resolution, but maybe you can by contacting *executive* customer support. Even if you don’t get a solution, you might at least get a definitive answer. Good luck!

Nothing high handed about it jerk, till now. You can have a google answer in a few seconds AS I DID. Or wait a few hours sitting on your thumbs waiting for mail from a NG that may never come.

IOW: There’s 10’s of thousands of machines out there. They all have problems. Most people post them where ever they feel they’ll get the most responses. And not to a single news group where the web search is almost completely missing.

The driver I used from the off was the latest on their web site and in a nutshell that is the service and attitude from them.

I was using Epson more or less from the off, but I admit I wrecked one by using ‘Inkwell’ inks in it and blocked the nozzles.
At the time I was doing a lot of CD/DVD printing and needed a replacement with that capacity. There seemed to be no Epsons left in the country (between models) at the time and the only machine left with that function was a Canon. Give the little thing it’s due, it has served magnificently and for A4/disc and Office stuff I would be loathe to change. Nary a blockage regardless of the ink used or the amount of time out of use.

I acquired a second hand A1 Epson a while back. It worked fine for a while, long enough for me to get confidence and buy a bulk supply of paper. Then I had to leave it for a couple of weeks and that was that, blocked nozzles which no amount of cleaning cycles or solvents could shift.

I went for the HP printer because I negotiated a deal on it and the HP 1220C I had got second hand a while back had been a good machine.

My experience with HP support is that they are absolutely the best printer support I’ve ever had. They Leave Epson for dead.

Having said that, your printer is what is termed "entry level" to A3 printing of photos. You need to be aware that Photoshop does not print to printers.

Yep, it prints to either Windows or MAc’s OS which in turn spools the document and uses the "Basic driver" to print with. Photoshop can send a printer a "Profile" to match paper types and RGB types but it doesn’t print by itself.

If you can provide some simple information, you will get some precise help.

1. What are you using? Windows or MacOS?

2. can you make a test print from the printer configuration part of your OS?

Then there are simple mistakes …things like "how did you install the printer driver"? Just connecting it and hoping the OS picks it up as a plug and pray devise is dynamite, absolutely guaranteed to fail.

If you did that, you better phone HP support for a walk through on how to remove all traces of What the OS decided would be the driver.

The driver was downloaded from their site and the ‘load printer’ system was pointed to the drive and folder into which I had exploded it.

Ah just a thought drivers? are they the correct ones for the printer? or are you using the generic MS ones?

Now that’s a bit twisted. More tomorrow.

This may sound like an over simplistic question but what happened to the installation disc?

All my HP (most Canon and Epson too) printers have required you to install the driver without the printer being on-line. At the end of the installation, you are asked to switch the printer on so it can be "discovered".

The point of this is to install essential dynamic link libraries into Windows itself so that when the plug and prey part of windows discovers the printer, it has the essential components for a clean install already in areas of Windows that post discovery, cannot be written to.

So now provided you did this in the right sequence, Photoshop should pick up the *OPTION* to use this printer. If you already have another printer or even Primo (the pdf converter or a fax) set as your default printer, you need to be aware that early Photoshop CS3’s print modules are flawed and may not necessarily send the print data to the right printer.

You can overcome this by actually paying for a licensed version of Photoshop – it’s the cracked ones that can’t be updated… which will let you update from the version with the flawed module or, set the printer information the way you want it before loading Photoshop.

When photoshop then ‘sees’ the default printer complete with all it’s settings, it will be the HP and information will be sent to it which should result in very nice photographs.

Provided you followed the right sequence to install the printer, the problem is with Photoshop. If my help doesn’t work, call Adobe’s help desk… It’s nothing to do with HP.

What you have to do is make sure that the printer is pointed at the HP drivers.

In the System Properties – Device Manager – USB Controllers check for the printer drivers and make sure it hasn’t loaded, or you are using the generic ones off the system,(MS drivers), should have something like -HP ??? B8350 – showing in the general/drivers/detail tabbed. This can occur when the easiest option for the system to install the printer. You may have to do an update drivers or add new hardware if its not showing.

So in other words make sure that HP have provided the drivers and you are not using the generic MS ones. This is very easy to miss when installing a USB device.

Other than that can’t help.

Epson’s advise is total rubbish. The phone jocks type your question in to a database and quote you a canned response. 73% success rate at getting the right response is pretty poor stuff, if you ask me.

I have 2, HP wide format printers (a designjet 130 and a z2400), plus a HP C5280 scanner/copier, a Minolta 7300 digital laser and a Small Dye sublimation printer all on USB ports on my PC.

Photoshop doesn’t always like me choosing other than the default printer at the time of print but never has it behaved badly enough to crash the system. I share the laser on my network.

I frequently see the laser start to print whilst a print is in progress on an inkjet without problems. Occasionally I burn DVDs whilst printing without hic ups either. No rocket science. Just a PC working properly… Why?

Because it was purpose built for the task. The Dell I replaced wouldn’t print to the chosen printer with any reliability and crashed Photoshop and Bridge whenever I saved a file… Ant you never knew which would crash!

The Dell cost $2.500 the custom built workstation I now use cost almost twice that but It’s worth every penny. I think most of these reported printer problems are flaky RAM or cheap crud motherboards. Often junk display cards will interfere with printers too.

Firewire is absolutely a stronger interface than USB. I had major trouble with an Epson scanner and only overcame the problem by using firewire instead of USB.

USB is a Microsoft invention. You’d think they could get it right… Until you see the mess they made of the last two operating systems they brought out. My Dell had a flaky motherboard – So the technician who bought it off me said after he sold me a custom built PC.

I have to say… I’m surprised at the difference. I never really thought a technician working under his house could build a better, more reliable PC than a Multi-National company’s top of the range item they sell to Government departments. He did and my hat goes off the him.
