And why would I be compelled to try it?
I don’t think there’s any compulsion involved David 😉
I do however suggest you simply try it and see for yourself.

And if you came across Lightroom on the Adobe Labs main page, seems to me that a good place to start learning about what it does would be to click on the "Learn More" link, eh David?
Here…allow me:

Any idea what the music is that plays during the demo?
Any idea what the music is that plays during the demo
I had "Relay" from The Who, knocking 7 on the Richter scale, while installing Beta 4 on, so didn’t hear any music other than that.

I had "Relay" from The Who…
That would be very different. The site plays something that is electronically akin to Gamelon music in a way.
Gamelon
Gamellan?
Are you sure? I’m instructed to take the medicine whenever I hear that.

Okay, I don’t mean to be insulting, . . . but, I think my question — what is Lightroom? is pretty straightforward and simple.
I’ve gotten a suggestion to check the Lightroom web site (which I’ve already done, and which prompted me to ask the question in the first place), where they tell me they’re going to engage me in a new way (more baffling I assume), that I get to "kick tires" (now that’s some software–I should download it!) and I once again get to see the word "workflow," which I think is a word that means "how we work."
But the site never really tells me what the program is, so why should I download it?
The forum string ends with a musical discussion about Gamelan. Great. (No, really, Gamelan is great, but still doesn’t tell me about Lightroom)
So, once again, can someone tell me — without musical interlude — what Lightroom is? Or is it so beta that no one really knows?
I agree with you David. I looked over the website and concluded that it would be way too much work to figure out what it was. Although I will say, that there were some videos – I didn’t bother with them, but the dedicated researcher might glean more comprehensive information from them.
The reason I’ve been following this thread is to see what folks say. Conclusion: not much.
I can’t get a sense of what this program does, is, or how its different than Photoshop
They are totally different animals.
Lightroom is mainly aimed at (busy) professional photographers. Importing, sorting, processing, presenting and organizing high volume of digital images
For starters
can you say Metadata based workflow (Lightroom) vs. standard, pixel based in Photoshop?
David,
In very simplified terms, the comparison should be more between Bridge +ACR and Lightroom than Photoshop and Lightroom.
Okay, thanks all. That gives me much more of a sense about the program.
David.
So, Lightroom would be the tool of choice for a graphic editor in a magazine or stock agency, let’s say, to organize and sort their stuff?
It includes some sort of data management feature. I have iView Media Pro, so I don’t think it’ll do anything I don’t already have with Bridge, Photoshop, and iView Pro.
Stil, I suppose I’ll fool around with it to see what it is.
See, only 17 posts.
Thanks for the link smithee.
